Report No. 135

6.6. Recommendation regarding section 37.-

Amongst the visitors to be appointed by the Government under section 37, Mental Health Act1, two are to be social workers. In our view, at least one social worker should be a woman, wherever that is practicable, so that suspected malpractices against female in-patients can be looked into and, wherever necessary, suitable preventive .measures can also be suggested. We recommend that section 37(1), Mental Health Act, 1987, should be amended by adding, after the words "two social workers", the words "of whom at least one shall be a woman, wherever practicable".
