19. Statistics of motor accidents.-

The figures of total number of accidents caused by motor vehicles in India during the years 1968-1970 are given below1:-










Statistics as to the precise number of persons injured or killed by "hit-and-run" drivers are not available. But the number of such persons is bound to increase with growing urbanisation. Common experience would justify the assumption that the cases are not so infrequent that they should go totally unnoticed.

20. It is stated1 that the number of persons killed per 1,000 motor vehicles in India is as high as eight, as against 0.5 to 2 in European countries. In Madras, pedestrians formed the bulk of those killed in road accidents (104 out of 184 in the city).
