The year 1892 witnessed the transfer of an Arya Samaj evening school from Meerut to the dale of Dehradun. That sapling grew and developed as D.A.V School. Gradually growing, extending its branches slowly towards sunshine, it turned as Dayanand Anglovedic Post Graduate College, Dehradun with the help of people like the munificent Thakur Puran Singh Negi who donated his entire immovable property to the educational institute.
It nurtured well on the principles laid by Swami Dayanand and was also influenced by Anglo Education System. It has now emergrd as one of the most famous premier institution of Northern India afterIndependence and the biggest college of Uttaranchal State having all the five faculties and twenty one isciplines.D A V (P.G) College owes its name to the synergism of old vedic education and modern education.
In 1904 Dehradun sprawled in an area of 3 or 4 square miles, near Sri Guru ram Rai Darbar Sahib. The bank of Rispana river circumscribing Mansinghwala and Sewak Ashram marked the contours with D.A.V. Inter College in its fold. This institution was originally founded as a school by Sri Jyoti Swarup (Arya Pratinidhi Sabha) in Meerut, which could not run well.
So Sri Jyoti Swarup in consultation with Sri Pooran Singh Negi shifted it in 1904 to Karanpur, Dehradun, and merged it in the Sanskrit Pathshala run by Sri Negi.This institution had a scintillating future to bloom and blossom later as Dayanand Anglo Vedic Post Graduate College, Dehradun. It was possible due to magnificent donation of Rupees two lacs worth property initially by Sri P.S. Negi.
The location of this school was at Karanpur, Dehradun. It was a Middle school upto 1910. From 1911 it become High School. Gradually it rose to the status of Intermediate College in 1922, became a Degree College in 1946 and Post Graduate College in 1948. Sandhya, Havan and chanting of Vedic mantras were a regular feature those days,which added fervor of divinity and imbued with national spirit.
It is a prestigious institution of Northern India and the biggest college of Uttaranchal state, having all the five faculties and twentyone disciplines at present. It is managed at present by Dayanand Shiksha Sansthan. Late Dr. Brijendra Swarup, later Dr. Virendra Swarup and at present Sri Jagendra Swarup, MLC, is looking after the interests of the college.
The main college building and two hostels were constructed by the munificence of Late Sri Pooran Singh Negi. Sri Pooran Singh Negi donated 4 lacks worth assets to the institution as pointed out in the registered deed in 1912. He was born in 1832 and died in the year 1912.DAV PG College is the oldest and prestigious post graduate college in Dehradun was established in 1948 affiliated to HNB Garhwal University Srinagar.
Almost half of the Dehradun students take their graduation degree from this college. The Student strenght of this college is very high if all the student attend the college then definately there would be a big diffculty. DAV College was the only college in Dehradun earlier for PG Studies before the development of private colleges. The College offers vast number of Undergraduation and Postgraduation Courses.
