A premier institution for legal education in Asia, the School of Legal Studies is located in the serene campus of the Cochin University of Science and Technology, located about 15 kilometers north of Kochi city, the Queen of Arabian Sea.The School of Legal Studies, was established in 1962 as Department of Law of the Kerala University. Later, it became a part of the Cochin University when it was established in 1971. It was headed by an internationally acknowledged scholar, the late Dr. A. T. Markose who was the founder Director of the Indian Law Institute, New Delhi. He set in motion ambitious teaching programmes which have produced a large number of scholars who came to adorn high positions in the legal field. He also initiated steps to publish an outstanding law journal which won the acclaim of the legal fraternity. Renowned throughout Asia for its quality Programmes in PostGraduate and Doctoral levels, this institution offers regular and extension programmes in emerging areas in Law. The School has been expanding its Legal Literacy Programmes and its Legal Aid Clinic has been doing remarkable work in this regard. The social surveys undertaken by the Clinic have helped the students to identify problem areas in law, adding new dimensions to the academic programmes of the School. The School has got a prestigious series of Public Law Lectures . Course Description:
The BBA. LL.B. (Hons) curriculum shall consist of 20 compulsory courses in Business Management, 26 compulsory and 14 elective courses In Law. Six of the elective courses shall be chosen and offered by the Law School from among the General Elective Course. The other eight elective courses shall be chosen either wholly from a particular group or fro various groups shown as Special Elective Group viz., Constitutional Law, Business Law and Agriculture, Intellectual Property Law and such other groups introduced by the University/Bar Council from time to time depending upon the availability of infrastructural facilities.

Special electives for LLB(Hons) are: Insurance Law, Banking Law, Space Law, Corporate Finance, Cyber Law, Law of the Sea, Competition Law, International Trade Law, Securities Law designed to meet the needs of the industry. To inculcate the practical skills to law students, legal aid programme and frequent debates are also included as part of the curriculum. The University has also taken initiative in sending The LL.B. students to moot courts both at the national and international level. They are also sent to internship in law firms, chambers of senior advocates, NGO's in and outside Kerala during semester break every year.
