Sabarkantha is a backward district on the border of GujaratRajasthan. The area is hilly and rich with minerals and forest produce. The entire topographical sight of the district is rich in natural beauty and it has many spots which can be developed as picnic places.
It is surrounded by the Arvalli Hills, the oldest mountain ranges in the world. Though the area is rich in natural wealth, it is populated by the people who are economically poor and culturally deprived. During the movement of freedom struggle the people of this area contributed substantially.
Under the able leadership of Mathuradas Laljidas Gandhi and his team.After independence the leaders of Modasa decided to provide an opportunity of providing higher education to the needy of this area and establish a public charitable trust which is registered the Act.
The purpose of this Trust is to establish and run institution for higher education institution for catering to the needs of this area and bring them into the main stream.
The Trust is aptaly named after a well known revolutionary, freedom fighter, social worker and educationist "Shri Mathuradas Laljibhai Gandhi". The M. L. Gandhi Higher Education Society started Arts and science College first with the donation of the generous donors like Sir Purushottamdas Thakordas and Shri Somalal Kasturdas Shah and the partners of Shri Krishna Oil Mill.
So, the colleges were named after them. Thus the first college was called Shri S. K. Shah & Shri Krishna O. M. Arts College and Sir P.T.Science College in 1960.
In a short time this college started throbbing with vitality under the academic leadership of its first principal Dr. Dhirubhai Thakar, who, after his retirement is busy making an encyclopedia in Gujarati named Gujarati Vishwakosh, a most prestigious work.
The first president of this education society was Late shri Raichanddas Khatudas Shah.At present there are various college also like Arts, Science,Commerce,Education,Law,PharmacyDiploma,PharmacyDegree ,P.T.C and even an English Medium School.
The Colleges are situated on an 18 acre of land and they are equipped with ultramodern educational equipments.Most of the colleges impart education up to Post Graduation level. The total student population of the campus is about 5000. The Society award, prizes and medals to meritorious student as shown below from the donation received from generous donors.
The College has a big playground, separate sports complex on Pahadpur road and a botanical garden.There are separate hotels for girls, boys and children.There are study centers for the courses of Indira Gandhi National Open University and Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Open university.
Dr. Dawoodbhai Ghanchi OSA Centre, for promotional and research activities in education. This was established by the donation of the old students of Dr. Dawoodbhai Ghanchi, the founder principal of B.D.Shah College of Education. Shri. Ambalal Ranchhoddas Sura Cultural Museum is the only museum of its type in any college in Gujarat.
It has a good collection of precious monuments collected from this area.Shri Ramanlal P. Soni Sahitya Sanshodhan Kendra for literary research activities.Shri Manilal Vadilal Community Science Centre, established for creating awareness for science among the students in particular and the society in general.
