National Law School gets tech-savvy by putting lectures online

Distance will not hinder your aspirations for a law degree from the National Law School for India University (NLSIU), Bangalore, as the school is becoming tech-savvy, by putting lectures online for its distance education programme. According to the new plans, lectures for the distance education programmes will be recorded separately in a studio in small modules. The recorded lectures, approximately of duration 30 minutes, will be emailed to students. As of now, conduct classes for these programmes were held once a month, only in Bangalore. Around 3,500 students from across the globe enroll in the distance education programme, including many from African countries, Germany and Singapore.

"Students from Karnataka, which is a thousand-odd, have the advantage of listening to lectures and clarifying their doubts. We wanted to extend the service to others. Web learning is the key in this technical era. We voted against video conferencing as students need to have the facility and the timings must be synchronised. Email makes it leisurely.

The conducted classes cannot be recorded as the clarity will be low," said V Nagaraj, registrar, NLSIU. The school has also made other facilities, like payment of fees and filling of application forms online. NLSIU is also in the process of asking embassies in other countries to conduct their exams so that students can avoid coming to India for the test. Delhi and Pune, which also send a high number of students, are the other centres along with Bangalore, where exams will be held.

The distance programmes that are offered are Master of business laws, PG diploma in human rights, PG diploma in medical law and ethics, PG diploma in environment law, PG diploma in intellectual property rights law and PG diploma in child rights law. PG diploma in consumer law and practice and cyber forensics will be added this year.
