National Conference on Development & Protection of Traditional Music 'Creators and Performers' Rights

National University of Study & Research in Law, Ranchi is pleased to announce a one day National Conference on Development & Protection of Traditional Music 'Creators and Performers' Rights in Jharkhand on the eve of World IP Day.

Intellectual Property Rights, the regime of the day, proved its role in the 21st century in all walks of life i.e., Trade, Technology, Science etc., The various branches of Intellectual Property such as patents, trademark, copyright, industrial designs, integrated circuits, trade secrets, biodiversity, plant variety protection reached to all areas of the society and the day and night without intellectual property rights became inevitable for human being. India being key role player in international trade, technological advancement, rich in genetic resource legislated laws for protection and administration of Intellectual Property Rights and also ratified International Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPs) which is a part of World Trade Organization (WTO).

Jharkhand is not an exception to the rule of the day. Intellectual property rights also emerged into the normal life of the human being in Jharkhand. The understanding of the intellectual property rights both from legal and administrative point of view has become must not only for industrialists and scientists of Jharkhand but also to the heirs of the traditional culture and expressions.

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)'s Model Law for the Protection of Traditional Knowledge and Expressions of Culture (2002) provides guidelines to the member countries relating to the legislative framework for the protection of 'traditional cultural expressions' or 'expressions of folklore' which includes musical expressions, and expressions by action such as dances and other performance. According to Model Law 2002, the beneficiaries of expression of folklore to be the communities rather than any individual who may have been the starting point for the creation of a particular expression of folklore. The broadest scope of protection aimed through Model Law, 2002 is the protection of expressions of folklore of particular cultural or spiritual value to a community, under the condition that such expressions are registered and notified.

Center for Study and Research in Intellectual Property Rights (CSRIPR), NUSRL is one of the research center established under the National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi. The main objective of the center is to provide information, training and education to the interested parties about the acquisition, administration, valuation and management of Intellectual Property of Jharkhand. The main objective of this Conference is to bring all the Traditional Music 'Creators and Performers' on to a single platform to enlighten them about their Intellectual Property Rights and the ways of protection, method of commercial exploitation etc.,

With this background, CSRIPR is proud to announce that Celebration of World IP Day (26th April) every year has become a convention and organizing a workshop/seminar/symposium upon a theme relevant to the WIPO has become a custom. In continuation, CSRIPR is coming up with the Workshop on 'Development & Protection of Traditional Music 'Creators and Performers' Rights in Jharkhand' on 26th April, 2015 in collaboration with MSME Jharkhand to provide a common platform to deliberate upon the various ways and means required to be adopted for the development of IPR in Jharkhand and the role of different stake holders.
