1st NUJS SITC Model WTO Conference on Anti-Dumping

The First Edition of NUJS SITC Model WTO Conference is being organized by the Society of International Trade & Competition (SITC) in association with the NUJS Model United Nations Society.

Date: 8th - 9th March, 2014
Venue: The WB National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata

WTO is the only international organisation dealing with the global rules of trade between nations. Its main function is to ensure that trade rows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible. Decisions are made by the entire membership. This is typically by consensus.

In the aftermath of the Second World War it was agreed a new framework for global cooperation was needed. This especially extended to trade, an area believed to have been part of the cause of the political turmoil of the 1930s. This vision was first realized in 1948 when the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) was agreed by 23 countries. As time progressed, rounds of negotiations saw dramatic falls in the level of tariffs and more states signed up to the agreement. Eventually, in 1993, GATT was updated and a new organization was established to take over its role and become a truly global body in international trade.

In 1995 the World Trade Organization became the body set up with encouraging multilateral agreements and facilitating an expansion in free and fair trade. Since 2001, the Doha Round of negotiations has been ongoing and aims to tackle more issues than ever before in an increasingly globalized economy. It has one of the most difficult tasks of any international body and in the 21st century, the WTO has become one of the most important multilateral bodies in the world. The idea behind the Model WTO is a real life simulation of the World Trade Organisation.

The agenda for the first edition of the SITC Model WTO is "Anti-Dumping". The event is open to all interested University/College students studying in India.
