Development the buzzword of the current times is considered to be very positive and every society in the world is striving hard to achieve a 'developed' status. But what has been practiced in the name of development today often seems to be not creating a better or equitable world. The fruits of Industrial development or economic growth are not made available to everyone in society and the marginalized and weaker sections are often victims of development. So it is high time to revisit the very idea of development' that we are practicing today and Social Science has a lead role to play in this regard.
Only a critical engagement with the current practices would be help us to find a way out. The paradigms that we are using today have to be revisited for their effectiveness in addressing the livelihood and welfare issues of the people. Production, growth, education, legislations, government, civil society organisations, market and every such institutions that deals with the idea of 'Development' has to be re-imagined in a new way.
Governments find it extremely difficult to go ahead with the development projects with the increasing resentment of the people and their movements against such projects. This makes an academic response to this issue inevitable and the present seminar is an attempt to take up this challenge. The seminar intends to bring social scientists who are working in the area of development to have an engagement of different disciplinary perspectives on the major theme of the seminar.
