Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Intellectual Property Management inaugurated
The Union Minister of Commerce, Industry and Textiles, Shri Anand Sharma inaugurated the National Institute of Intellectual Property Management (NIIPM) building at Nagpur on 21st July, 2012 and named it "Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Intellectual Property Management"
The Minister also announced the decision to establish the India Intellectual Property Foundation which DIPP will set up in collaboration with CII and WIPO at NIIPM, Nagpur. "This development will help in synergizing the various IPR initiatives in the country and will immensely benefit all stakeholders. This will make Nagpur and Maharashtra the hub for research related Intellectual Property Activity in India" said the Minister.
NIIPM has been established at Nagpur as a nodal institute for fulfilling the need of IP training and awareness at the national level and to develop human resources in IP as a long term strategy.
NIIPM was established at the cost of Rs 27.42 crore with an aim of fostering the creation, development and utilisation of Intellectual property as envisaged in the legislation on the subject. The institute will fulfil the needs of IP ecosystem by education, training, research, policy formulation and awareness. In the light of increasing workload of patent application Indian Intellectual Property Office (IPO) recently recruited a batch of 257 examiners. Of patents and designs who will undergo a comprehensive one year training at NIIPM.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Prithviraj Chavan and Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment SHri Mukul Wasnik along with Industry Secretary Shri Surabh Chandra addressed the audience.
NIIPM will also function as a think tank in IPRs and will be developed as the centre of excellence for IP-education and research and to act as a think tank in the field of Intellectual Property Rights. The construction of a new building of NIIPM with all modern facilities has been completed recently at the cost of Rs. 18 Crores. NIIPM will soon have a residential complex to provide residential facility for IP Stakeholders availing training at NIIPM.
Nagpur has been carefully selected as the location for establishing NIIPM taking into consideration its special geographical significance and also the fact that Nagpur is an important industrial centre and hub for higher education and research.
NIIPM is being developed as an effective and world class intellectual property management institute of the Country. The major benefits that the country will receive will be:
- Streamlined, rationalized and greatly expanded scope and impact of IP training by pooling national IP resources at one location
- Streamlined and harmonized training on new and emerging fields of technologies for examiners in IP offices and for stakeholders
- Partnership with various academy, commercial, government and non-government institutes for delivery of effective training on IPRs
- Identification and generation of resource pool for IPR experts in the country
- Stronger capacity for analysis and implementation of IP Law provisions
- Establishing focused IP courses in collaboration with the universities and other institutes
- NIIPM will also closely cooperate with World Intellectual Property Organization and other International IP Institutes
NIIPM is providing quality training in IPRs to officials of Intellectual Property Office including newly recruited Examiners of Patent & Designs and also to IP stakeholders involved in creation and management of IPRs like industries, universities, legal professionals, R&D organisations, MSME, individual inventors, IP professionals and people from specific sectors like pharmaceuticals, agricultural, biotechnology etc.
NIIPM has also been conducting awareness programmes in the country for building awareness on IPRs. NIIPM will soon start short and long term certificate and diploma courses in IPRs.
