International Conference on Dharma & Ethics: Tradition, Religion & Law
The Dharma and Ethics conferences are organized every year by the Centre for the Study of Local Cultures, established at Kuvempu University in collaboration with the Research Centre Vergelijkende Cultuurwetenschap at Ghent University, Belgium. The conferences are part of a larger project to address some of the problems with the existing theories about India in the domain of social sciences. So far the Centre has organized five conferences on various themes like religion, the caste system, political thoughts, the rejuvenation of social sciences, etc. This year the conference will be organized in collaboration with the Karnataka State Law University, at Hubli, where the university is located.
The present conference focuses on the theme "Tradition, Religion and Law".
Date: 28th - 29th January, 2012
Venue: Hotel Travel Inn, Hubli-Dharwad Road, Dharwad
This conference is also seen as a preparation for two other initiatives:
- The fourth international conference of the Rethinking Religion in India cluster (RRI), to be held in Hubli in September, 2012.
- The creation of an international research group on Comparative Law" at the Karnataka State Law University.
Instead of formulating an overarching set of questions to guide this Dharma and Ethics conference, the organizers (Kuvempu University) have chosen to isolate some concrete issues to be taken up in three different modules.
Module 1: Implications of Religious Distinctions for Law in India
Module 2: Religion, Law and Society
Module 3: On the nature of Law, Legal Disputations and justice in traditional mode
