National Seminar on Law and Medicine
GITAM, School Law and GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences, Visakhapatnam are jointly organizing a two day National Seminar on Law and Medicine.
Date: 14th & 15th February, 2020
Venue: GITAM (Deemed to be University), Visakhapatnam
About the Seminar:
Health and well being of a society and analogous awareness about interconnected legal aspects are quintessential towards ensuring that every human being has access to essential services towards maintenance of good health - both physical and mental. Concerted efforts by the legislature and judiciary in India have ensured that the concept of right to health is read to the constitutional rights framework that emerges out of Art.21.
However, implementation of this right is flagged with acute concerns of below par services, deficient resources, futile legislative measures and ineffective executive action, which has in effect submerged this right in a quagmire of exploitation and profit-mongering by medical care professionals and providers. In an emerging economy like India, maintenance of reasonable health standards and ensuring a safe environment are basic minimum standards that an aspiring society comes to expect out of its government. Practical concerns about affordability and accessibility on one hand, and ethical dilemmas on the other, continue to cloud the giant leaps made in the fields of gene tweaking, organ transplantation - to name a few.
There is a pressing need, therefore, to overhaul the existing legislations in the health sector and attune them to current socio-legal imperatives. This is what forms the background for and is the rationale behind holding the seminar.
