The "Department of Post graduate Studies and Research in Law", Rani Durgawati Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur, was granted affiliation in the year 1961 by the Bar Council of India. That year was the Golden year in the field of Legal History of Jabalpur. It laid the foundation stone in the field of Legal education at a place, which is facilitated by the presence of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh. Since 1961 the department has prospered and has been consistently growing in the hands of visionary legal luminaries. The main objective of the department has been to provide a specialised, high quality legal education, as well as to improve the quality, talent and skills of the individuals to help them lead their lives assuccessful professionals and responsible citizens of the country.The University appointed Hon'ble JusticeShri T.C.Shrivastava as Dean, Law faculty on the notification of the Governor. Shri Narendra Singh M.A. LL.M. (London), LL.M. (Harvard) BaratLaw was appointed as Reader & Head, Department of Law on 16th Sep. 1961. He devoted almost fourteen precious years of his life to the department. The department has made persistent efforts to provide the best education under the able guidance of Prof. P.L. Shrivastava (1976 81), Prof. N.V. Paranjpe (1981 83), Dr. M.P. Swarnkar (1983 84), Prof. M.L. Upadhaya (1984 88), Prof. J.K. Pandey (1989 95), Prof. (Dr.) M.A. Qureshi (1995 01), Dr. (Mrs.) Divya Chansoria till date(2007). Their contribution towards teaching, research and development of the department will always be remembered in times to come. In the year 2001 under the proficient leadership of Dr. (Mrs.) Divya Chansoria the department has incessantly bloomed and has been furnished with all the modern accessories required in the teaching of law like computers, photocopier, over head projectors etc. The students of the department have full access to all these facilities.Regular LL.M. Classes were started from the academic session 196162 and the strength and number of faculty members increased thereon. Since then, imparting legal instruction for LL.B. (3 years) Degree Course, LL.M. (2 years) degree course, Guidance to research scholars in law has been the main objective of the department. It has also imparted instruction in various P.G. Diploma courses viz, Labour Laws, Taxation, Administrative Law, Trial and Advocacy, etc. The Department in the year 2000 introduced B.A LL.B. Hons. (5 years) degree course, on semester basis running into ten semesters.The first batch of this course is already successfully displaying their skills not only in the High Court but in various other multinational companies and corporate sectors.The LL.M. Postgraduate Degree Course is being run by this department in five groups as per U.G.C guidelines :History reveals that over the past decade this department has emerged as a centre of high level teaching in various branches of Law. Various Seminars have been organised on different subjects, few of them are: "Legal Aspects of International Trade", "Obscenity and Law", "Fundamental Rights to Property : Its Legal, Social and Economic Implication", "How has Parliamentary Democracy succeeded in India". In March 2002 a seminar on "Women and Law" and "Intellectual Property Rights: Myths and Realities" was organised by the joint efforts of the whole department under the efficient supervision of Dr. (Mrs.) Divya Chansoria. A National Moot Court competition was successfully organized in February 2007.
