Chaudhary Devi Lal University, named after Jan Nayak (late) Chaudhary Devi Lal, the former Deputy Prime Minister of India, who belonged to this region of Haryana state. The University was established by the Government of Haryana by an Act of Legislature in the year 2003(Act No.9/2003) and was inaugurated on April 5, 2003. The University, located at Sirsa at a distance of 256 kms from Delhi and 285 from Chandigarh, has a sprawling campus of 348 acres on the Barnala Road.The National Highway No. 10 and the DelhiRewariBathinda Railway Line pass through Sirsa.Thesquadron head quarter of Indian Air Force with an airport is also in the vicinity of Sirsa city. Though Sirsa is situated in Haryana, it adjoins both Punjab and Rajasthan. The University has great potential for developing into a Centre of Academic Excellence to cater the students belonging to Haryana and other states of the country.The University has been successfully running 16 Academic Departments, which offer 21 Career oriented and specialized courses to the students. These courses are: M.Tech. (Computer Science & Engineering), MCA, M.Sc. (Biotechnology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Food Science & Technology, Energy & Environmental Sciences), MBA, M.Com., B.Ed., M.P.Ed., D.P.Ed., C.P.Ed., M.A.(English, Economics, Public Administration, Journalism & Mass Communication), LL.B. Renowned and experienced academicians of the country have been involved in designing the course curriculum of these subjects. Special care is taken to follow the UGC and AICTE guidelines and the National Standards in preparing and imparting the course through highly qualified faculty members of the University.Charged with a fresh academic exuberance, the university now embarks upon a fresh voyage, the purpose of which is to disseminate profound thinking, teaching, research, investigation and exploration of the unexplored areas of knowledge by the scholars and teachers engaged to help the society to attain the pinnacle of glory. In order to achieve the noble objectives, the University from 20062007 is offering joboriented professional courses, like one year PG Diploma in: Clinical Microbiology & Pathology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Radiology & XRay Therapy, Food Processing & Preservation, DNA Finger Printing and Forensic Science, Environmental Education & Awareness,Internet & Mobile Technology, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO). In addition, the University has started M.Phil Programmes in: Management, Education, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Commerce, Economics, English, Journalism & Mass Communication, Lib. & Information Science as well as other Programmes like LL. B. Five Year Integrated, Five Year Integrated MBA. By introducing such courses, the University intends to expand its contribution in the sphere of knowledge and research in existing as well as emerging areas of study. These Scientific and professional courses would further augment Ph.D. Programmes, which the University has currently introduced in order to widen its academic horizons.In order to reach the unreached students, the University from this session has offered joboriented courses through Distance Education mode to meet the challenging and growing requirements of the people who can not afford regular studies. These courses are intended for selfenrichment as well as for professional competence and skill upgradation. The University offers the following courses through Distance Education: MBA (General), MBA (ECommerce), MBA (Hospital Administration), MCA, MHRM, MIB, M. Com. PG Diploma in:Investment Banking, Master of Insurance Business, Master of Bank Management, M.A. in: Education, Social Work, Journalism & Mass Communication , PG Diploma in: Computer Applications, Business Administration, Rural Development, Information Systems, Bachelor of Library and Information Science, Diploma in Art and Crafts and Diploma in Fashion Designing. The University is also planning to make collaboration with foreign Universities in order to exchange knowledge, expertise and other pedagogic practices, which are essential for the qualitative development of the University.In order to promote excellence in the Distance Education, Paramedical Science and applied courses, the University has established the Centre for Distance Learning and the Centre for Paramedical and Applied Sciences under the selffinanced Institute of Professional and Scientific Studies and Research (IPSSR) from academic session 20062007. This Institute along with the University Centres of Distance Learning (UCDL) and Paramedical & Applied Sciences (UCPAS) are devoting their immense efforts to launch the above mentioned courses and maintain the quality, access and equity for excellence in teachinglearning process.The University has planned these academic programmes in view of the recent significant paradigm shifts from the teachercentered to learnercentered education and the replacement of traditional method of learning over a specified period by the concept of informal and continuous lifelonglearning. The urge of such shift is natural in view of the fact that the knowledge and information in the era of information technology are the instruments of power and thus holds the key to the future Developments: The focus of development is unrevealingly shifting from material to human development. Therefore ‘human recourses’ is being designates as the intimate’ recourses’. The quality of any society in future will be assessed from the quality of the human recourses it is comprised of and of which it is creator. This shift has altered the concept and role of Universities and educational Institutes for a qualitative change to meet the needs of ever changing scenario of the society and world.To meet this Challenge, the University will pioneer the development of new knowledge through scholarly understanding and professional practice programmes, teaching, research, counseling, and developing competent and talented professionals. The University is committed to adopt this culture by developing a highly qualified, skilled, talented and motivated faculty/staff, effective governance, Leadership Management and beneficial collaborations with other institutes of the country and abroad.The University has already employed permanent faculty who are distinguished scholars in their respective disciplines. Besides teaching, they are contributing quality research papers in National and International Research Journals. The University will employ need based faculty keeping in view the increasing number of students in various departments.As an unambiguous sign of growth and development, more infrastructure facilities have been added to the existing facilities in the University. His Excellency, Dr. A.R. Kidwai the Governor of Haryana and Chancellor of the University has recently inaugurated a girls’ hostel named after Kalpana Chawla, a renowned scientist of NASA in the University campus. In addition, an extension block of Tagore Bhawan has also recently been inaugurated. Many other infrastructure facilities are near completion.We feel proud of the fact that during the session 200506 our University organized a number of National Level Seminars and National Workshops. The scholars and teachers of national and international repute participated and presented their research papers. It was intellectually exciting experience for our students. The University is committed to pursue such academic and intellectual explorations and innovations with invigorated vigor and force so that it becomes and centre of academic excellence in the year to come.
