Short Term Course on "Patent Drafting and Claims Interpretation"

Inter University Centre for IPR Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology is offering a short term course on "Patent Drafting and Claims Interpretation" for Patent Professionals from 5th - 11th March, 2012.

Objectives of the Course:
Intellectual Property Law, especially Patent Law, is a crucial factor in the promotion of innovation and industrial investment in Research and Development in a market economy. The limited monopoly guaranteed by patent protection could boost industrial and technological development in a congenial atmosphere.

Unlike other forms of IP, patent protection is available for an invention only after registration. Preparation of patent application requires specialized skills. The most important and complicated part of patent application is the drafting of the claims ensuring adequate disclosure of the invention. It is important that the claims should be precise covering the exact invention and not broad going beyond it. Therefore, drafting of patent application requires a knowledge in the in the relevant field of technology and a thorough understanding patent rules.

This short term course is intended to equip professionals in the field of patent law in preparation of the patent application, particularly drafting of claims, and in interpreting patent claims in infringement suits.

Course Content:

  • General Introduction to Indian Patent Act
  • Procedure for registration of Patent - Statutory provisions
  • Structure of Patent Application
  • Drafting of claims - Practical exercises in the area of chemicals, biotechnology, software and mechanical engineering
  • Interpretation of claims - A comparative perspective of cases in England, US and India

Duration: 15 hours (Two hours a day from 5.30 PM to 7.30 PM.)

Venue: Seminar Hall, Department of Industrial Fisheries, Marine Science Campus, Foreshore Road, Ernakulam.
